At Summerhouse we believe that for our children to attain academically their social, emotional and behavioural skills must be addressed. Only by focusing on the promotion of children’s health and safety, wellbeing, personal and social development can we truly meet their needs and give them the opportunity to meet their full potential. We encourage our children to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. In doing so we help develop their sense of self-worth and their understanding of how society is organised and governed.

The aim of PHSE is to empower children through the whole curriculum to take responsibility for their lifestyle now and in preparation for future learning and decision making.

The objective of PHSE is to enable the children to:

• Develop self confidence and self esteem and make informed choices regarding personal and social issues.
• Develop emotional literacy with particular regard to recognising and being able to articulate how they are feeling.
• Know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle.
• Be aware of safety issues.
• Understand what makes for good relationships with others.
• Develop good relationships with other members of the school and the wider community.
• Have respect for others regardless of race, gender and mental and physical disability.
• Be independent and responsible members of the school community.
• Be positive and active members of a democratic society.
